Torre San Giovanni is a coastal town with an ancient history dating back to the Messapian city of Ozan, which was later renamed Uxentum by the Romans and finally Ugento. The area includes historical and archaeological sites, such as the ancient ruins of Contrada Pazze, and a communal pine forest of great natural interest. Additionally, there are vast agricultural and grazing areas. The marina has been awarded the "Foundation for Environmental Education" Blue Flag for its crystal clear and clean waters. The resident population has long sought to obtain the necessary services to make Torre San Giovanni a livable area even during the winter. In 2005, the marina obtained the status of a fraction, but the toponym "Marina di Ugento" is still commonly used, making the name Torre San Giovanni less known.
